Montpelier community Nursery
- Architect name : AY Architect, Dr Yeoryia Manolopoulou and Anthony Boulanger
- When, date the project was completed : 2012
- Where it is : public garden, Kentish Town, London United Kingdom
- Total floor plan : 136m2
Background narrative : the design intention of the architect, then my description of the design
The nursery was build to replace a " temporary pre-fabricated building, built in the 1980's" ( source 1). The nursery was design with the support of the local community, including children, staff, parent etc... AY archictect approach was guided by the location, a public garden; they wanted a "seamless connection with the landscape" (source 1). That lead to have a building with the possibility to have and indoor-outdoor play area, with big opening towards the garden. Followed by "the experience of a [...] bright and airy space" (source 2).
Reflection / critical paragraph : my judgment on the scheme and what i think of the design
I think the "seamless connection with the landscape" is really well achieve by the choose of material for the exterior cladding ebony-stained FSC (forest Stewardship Council ) siberian larch decking and the contrast with the pure white interior. The orientation of the roof offer a lot of natural light into the main room in a very sutle.
