Architecture and transgression : an interview with bernard tschumi, by jonathan mosley and rachel sara.

This short reading summarize what I consider to be some key notion of architecture, transgression and trans-programming.
The first one, is about knowing and playing and breaking the rules that we sets. Is it important to know the rule ? If you don't know them are you breaking them ? But if you don't the rules then how can you play ? In the text Tschumi explain that over time, doing something could be consider as transgression but as time as passed it has now become normal, there for what was transgression is not anymore, but it is human nature to push the limits. So Transgression is a perpetual transforming notion.
The second idea is trans-programming, translated by changing the use of something that was believe to be set. A church is a religious sacred place, it is now possible to change it into a bar ( Pitch and Piano in Nottingham for example). There are reason for this change, the need for opposition/rebellion or the need for money in order to save a sacred building, so you renovate it and during the renovation change it into a bar/restaurant.

I consider this quote from Tschumi to talk fro them self :
- " Architecture is simultaneously very abstract, but also very visual, and it can affect your emotions powerfully. This is why it is such an extraordinary field of endeavour. The pleasure of excess is a much in the mind as in the sense. So is architecture"
- "Architecture mus be willing to break free or its role in domesticating society's deepest fear, to on occasion sever its bondage in order to change, challenge as well as reflect society's ideal"
